Glossary of aluminium profile and glass hardware terms

Plain-English definitions of the terms fabricators, architects and homeowners meet when buying partition profiles and frameless glass hardware.

16x45 profile
An aluminium partition section 16 mm deep and 45 mm wide, used to frame glass office partitions and interior doors. See 16x45 partition profiles →
16x35 profile

Patch fitting
A metal clamp that holds the corner of a frameless toughened-glass door and connects it to a floor spring or top pivot. See patch fittings →
Floor spring
A hydraulic door closer set into the floor under a glass door that carries its weight, controls closing speed and returns it to centre. See floor springs →
Hydraulic patch fitting

Top pivot
The fitting at the top of a frameless glass door that holds the top patch and forms the upper pivot point. See patch fittings →
Overpanel
A fixed glass panel above a glass door, connected to the door and side panels with overpanel or L patches. See patch fittings →
Glass fin
A vertical glass strip set at right angles to a glass facade or entrance to stiffen it, joined with fin connectors. See patch fittings →
Combo patch set

Shower hinge
A hinge that lets a frameless glass shower door swing; named by angle: 90° (corner), 135° (angled) or 180° (inline). See shower hinges →
Magnetic seal

Stabiliser rod (knight head)

Telescopic sliding fitting

Crank hinge
A hinge for aluminium profile shutters; 0 crank gives full overlay, 8 crank half overlay and 16 crank an inset shutter. See profile hinges →
G handle profile

Kani profile

Hole centres
The distance between the fixing holes of a pull handle, which must match the holes drilled in the glass. See glass door handles →
Strike box
